April 3, 1973, is a day that has changed the telecommunication industry. That’s a day when the first call on a cell phone was made. Though commercially mobile services became available 10 years later, that day was a huge milestone on the road toward the mass adoption of cellular phones.
That first call was made from the Motorola DynaTAC cellular system prototype. And the person who became a pioneer in mobile calls was Motorola engineer Martin Cooper. He did it from Sixth Avenue in New York while walking between 53rd and 54th streets.
Now, this event is celebrated as a mobile phone’s birthday.
Today, the number of modern smartphone users has crossed the 6.6 billion mark which means that nearly 84% of people in the world own a smartphone. And this number is constantly growing. If initially, it was a “toy” for businessmen, now even children from primary school have their mobile devices.
