In this article, we are going to provide you with all the necessary information that you should know about this element of a standard mobile amplifier kit.
What is a coaxial cable used for?
To begin with, a coax cable is a special type of a cable that is usually used for transmitting data. It is able to deliver electrical signals of high frequencies over a distance without losing the signal power. Such cable can be used for different purposes, for example:
- For sending internet or cable satellite TV signals,
- For spreading telephone trunk lines over a specified area,
- For transferring cell signal between elements of signal repeaters.
These cables can have different lengths and sizes, depending on the use that they are designed for.
Reliable data transmissions, as well as protection from electromagnetic influence, are ensured thanks to the fact that a coaxial cable has two cores: outer and inner. The center core represents itself a copper-coated steel or copper wire. This part of the cable is responsible for carrying the signal.
Around the wire, there is a dielectric insulator. As a rule, plastic is used for this part. This material ensures a distance between the center and next layer. There is also an aluminum or copper shield that wraps the insulator. This layer prevents electromagnetic interference that may come from outside.
And finally, there is a layer that you can see without cutting your cable. This final layer is a wrapper made of rubber. It acts as an insulator of the whole cable.
Cables of this type can be used not only indoors but also outdoors if they have a proper protection from sun, rains and other external factors.
How does it work?
A signal goes across the wire located in the center of a cable and across a metal shield. These two metal elements are placed together to create a magnetic field. The insulators also play a very important role as they help the signals to stay separate without canceling each other and without establishing contact with each other.
With the insulators, the signal is also protected from the influence of the magnetic field that can come from outside.
Namely, this principle of signal transmission allows the signal to be sent over long distances and to stay strong without significant interference from external factors.
Coaxial cable types: are there many of them?
Despite the fact that the scheme and the principle of work of coaxial cables always stay the same, there are several types of them. As we have already mentioned, the types may vary in accordance with the application of this important element.
What parameters can differ?
- Length
- Core size
- Dielectric Type
- Impedance
- Max Attenuation
These characteristics define which cable is the best solution for this or that purpose.
All our signal booster kits include cables but if the standard length is not an appropriate variant for your case, you can easily customize your order.
In our online catalogue, you can find several kinds of cables of different lengths for indoor and outdoor use.
How to connect a coaxial cable?
There are connectors on both ends of each cable. A coaxial cable connector can be either female or male. Threads of female connectors are located on the outside of the shell while the situation with male connectors is opposite as threads are placed inside.
If the plug of a device is male, you need to plug in your cable from the side of a female connector and vice versa.
It’s also important to note that you can connect cables not only with different elements of devices or the network itself. They can be connected via a coaxial cable extender. It allows making one cable longer with the help of the second one.
Please, read attentively the instructions or even better consult with an expert before doing it!
Actually, there is nothing difficult in connecting cables and the overall process of booster installation usually takes no more than 15-20 minutes.
